SHOP TALK

JUNE 2003

The Role of the Church in Fighting HIV/AIDS

On Tuesday 24 June, MSCISA hosted its first Shop Talk for 2003 with the Archbishop of Cape Town, His Grace Njongonkulu Ndugane speaking on The Role of the Church in Fighting HIV/AIDS. A full house (30), representing a range of SRH response agencies (CDC, UNFPA, Centre for Youth Development, Wits, Positive Women's Network and others), participated in a lively exchange with His Grace.

Archbishop Ndugane outlined in detail, the Anglican Church's new initiative Isiseko Sokomoleza aimed at reducing the stigma and discrimination that surrounds AIDS. The three-year programme valued at R222-million targets the countries that fall within the Province of southern Africa (South Africa, Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique and St Helena). The initiative is funded by USAID, Christian Aid and DFID.
